Refining and recycling
Introduction
There are a number of sources of raw materials in Eve which go to feed
the manufacturing of most of the player owned items in game. These raw
materials are things like asteroid ores collected by miners, alloys
and compounds taken from rogue drones, and unwanted goods to be recycled.
Before these materials can be used in manufacturing they must processed
in a refinery to turn them into minerals.
Refineries
To process these materials a processing plant is needed. Many space
stations and outposts have such plants, and mobile refineries are
available to be installed on a POS (Player Owned Structure). These
plants vary in how efficient they are, with the best of them having a
base efficiency of 50%. These efficiencies are increased by the
skill of the operator... a skilled refiner can recover 100% of the
minerals using a refinery with a base efficiency of 50%.
Refine portion size
Refineries work by refining portions of ore, and the size of the portion
depends on the type of ore being processed, see the
ore table for portion sizes and mineral yields.
Ammunition and charges must also be processed in portions, though other
items such as alloys, compounds, modules and ships may be recycled
individually. Any quantity of material may be submitted for processing
in a single operation, any which cannot be fitted into a portion is
simply left unprocessed.
Refinery taxes
When using a refinery, the refinery owner will normally want to charge
you for it's use. This charge comes in the form of a tax which takes a
percentage of the refined minerals that you recover. The tax rate for
player owned refineries is set by the refinery owner. In the case of
NPC station refineries, the tax rate depends on your standing with the
station owner. The tax starts at 10%, and drops as you gain standing
with the NPC corp which owns the station. Once you have a standing of
6.67 or greater, your tax rate will drop to zero. Standings with NPC
corporations are increased by running missions for the corporation's
agents.
Refining / reprocessing skills
General refinery skills
- Refining Pre-requisites: Industry I
Skill at using refineries. 2% reduction in refinery waste per
skill level.
- Refinery efficiency Pre-requisites: Industry I and Refining IV
Advanced skill at using refineries. 4% reduction in refinery
waste per skill level.
Ore specific refining skills
These come groups with different pre-requisites. They all give an
ore specific specialization in processing and refining. This allows
a skilled refiner to utilize substandard refining facilities at
considerably greater efficiency for that ore. 5% reduction in
refining waste per skill level. The skill pre-requisites are:
-
Plagioclase, Pyroxeres, Scordite and Veldspar processing
skills require Industry I, Refining IV, Science III
-
Hemorphite, Jaspet, Kernite and Omber processing skills
require Industry I, Refining V, Science III
-
Dark ochre, Gneiss, Hedbergite and Spodumain processing skills
require Industry I, Metallurgy III, Refinery Efficiency IV,
Refining V, Science IV
-
Arkonor, Bistot, Crokite and Mercoxit processing skills
require Industry I, Metallurgy IV, Refinery Efficiency V, Refining
V, Science IV
-
Scrapmetal processing
requires Industry I, Metallurgy V, Refinery Efficiency V, Refining
V, Science IV
-
Ice processing
requires Engineering V, Hydromagnetic Physics IV, Industry I,
Refinery Efficiency V, Refining V, Science V
So a refiner needs to train Industry I, Refining to at least level IV,
preferably level V. Then Science III or better, Metallurgy, and some
ore specific skills. The way these skills combine is shown in this
table:
